A Newar Community

We spent the day in Bungamati learning about reconstruction projects and the history and architecture style of Newar people, who were the native people of Kathmandu Valley.

Our host Anil Tuladhar is an architect from the area, and we were lucky to have him show us around his hometown and the projects they’ve set up.

It was so interesting to see such a historical site and the style of woodwork that has been passed down through generations. And Anil, alongside UN Habitat have focused their efforts on promoting and supporting the reconstruction of houses and buildings in the traditional way. It is surprisingly difficult due to limited resources, building regulations and know-how.

I was moved by the sense of community and was grateful for the opportunity to visit the site and learn about the Newar people. Stay tuned to read more in our final report!
